Near the roadside between Aberdeen and Graaff-Reinet, in the middle of the veld, lies an old cast iron bedstead.

It marks the grave of a woman who tragically passed away. She succumbed to illness before her husband could get her to a doctor in Graaff-Reinet. In his grief, he buried her at this spot, leaving their marital bed as a makeshift headstone before continuing on his journey.

Cast iron beds only became commonplace in the late 19th century so it is unlikely to have been from the time of the Great Trek.
